Obi Wali: The Rationale For The Demand For Port Harcourt State

This was an agitation co-sponsored by the late Ikwerre activist, literary scholar, and politician, Obi Wali. The demand for Port Harcourt State was first spearheaded by the late Ogoni leader Ken Saro-Wiwa as a response to what he felt was a growing policy of ethnic discrimination against non-Ijos in Rivers State. Wali in this paper eloquently captures the issues and cultural and geographical dichotomy of the Ijos and non-Ijos, one being the argument that the Ijos are Niger Delta people while others are coastal plains people.

Chief Obi Wali's paper was published in a 1980 book named 'Creation of states in Nigeria: a review of rationale, demands, and problems up to 1980. The below is Wali's very insightful submission:
